Bee Pollen is one of those interesting foods that have been used and lauded by healers for centuries, but remains strangely off the radar in medical communities. Cultures that use it as a major source of nourishment have reported astonishing figures of longevity, and there have been many cases where people have credited it as keeping them alive past 100. Bee pollen is even considered a ‘survival food’ because it provides the body with everything needed to sustain life.
So now that I know it’s good for me, how do you go about taking it?
First of all, it’s important to know if Bee Pollen is right for you. In many cases it is very safe; however, people that have sensitive allergies (especially pollen allergies!) may experience an uncomfortable reaction. If you decide to take it, be wise and take a small dose at first just to see how your body reacts.
If you’ve never tried Bee Pollen before, suggested use is just one small granule. Place it on the tip of your tongue so that your body can absorb it, and then give it 20 minutes to see how your react.
Bee Pollen can be eaten by itself or combined with other ingredients to create smoothies, desserts or elixirs. You may find that Bee Pollen, by itself, has something of a bitter taste, so you may do well to mix it with something else. One recommended method is mixing it with honey and/or royal jelly to sweeten it.
A lot of people choose to use Bee Pollen as a topping or add it to a drink that will neutralize the taste. There are plenty of recipes available online and in health stores that incorporate Bee Pollen.
What kind of Bee Pollen do I buy?
Here are a few tips:
- Some people (although not all) maintain that Bee Pollen is best when purchased from local sources.
- If you’re interested in going local, check with your local Beekeeper! That might be an interesting experience anyway.
- Make sure that your pollen was gathered from flowers that were not sprayed from pesticides.
- Check your local health food store. Everyone carries it usually.
