Do You Need Vitamin D Supplements?
You may be surprised to find out that many people do need Vitamin D Supplements.
Vitamin D is found in various foods such as fish liver oils, dairy products, eggs, butter, cod liver oil, dandelion greens, liver, milk, oatmeal, salmon, sardines, sweet potatoes, tuna and vegetable oils. Also, when your skin is exposed to sunlight vitamin D is synthesized in your skin from cholesterol. Exposing your skin to the sun for 15 minutes at least three times a week is said to ensure you will get enough vitamin D. If you do not get enough exposure to sunlight or are not eating enough vitamin D rich foods you may need vitamin D supplements.
Vitamin D helps our body absorb calcium. The liver and kidneys process Vitamin D. During this process it is turned into a substance that controls the amount of calcium that is absorbed into the bloodstream
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which allows our body to store it. So, if you get more Vitamin D than your body needs it is stored in your liver. This means you should pay close attention to the recommended usage on the vitamin D supplement you use to make sure you are not getting too much.
I was surprised when my health care provider found that my Vitamin D levels were extremely low. My health care provider states that most of the patients they see need Vitamin D supplements.
Under the supervision of my doctor I doubled the normal recommended dosage for one month to build up my Vitamin D level, then went on a maintenance plan of normal daily supplementation. I work in an office 5 days per week and rarely get enough exposure to the sun. Although I eat oatmeal almost every day, and take a fish oil supplement it was not enough. I have to say I'm not very fond of fish and have allergies to dairy and eggs, so I do not consume enough vitamin D rich foods to provide what my body needs.
If you are considering a Vitamin D supplement - here is a brand that I trust.
