If you’re reading this website, there’s a good chance that for whatever reason, you’ve recently changed your diet. Protein shakes are a great way to get an energy boost and to pick up vital muscle-building protein to help you shape up. As you may know, there are literally thousands of protein powders out there on the market. To help figure out which protein powders really are the best, I decided to go directly to the source. I did some field research and went to a couple of different kinds of health food stores, asking the employees there to give me some recommendations. Just for fun, I also asked them to also give me tips for people that have restrictions such as food intolerances.
Muscle Milk Rules the Roost
My first stop was at The Vitamin Shoppe, a large chain store for natural health and sports nutrition. It could be said that they specialize in protein powder since it comprises half their merchandise selection. They recommended that one of the best all-around protein powders is Muscle Milk or Monster Milk.
This protein powder is used widely by college athletes for its low-carb ratio. It is also sugar-free and lactose-free. Thus, it’s perfect for individuals on a restricted diet. I might add that almost 100% of protein powders that you find in the grocery store or Wal-Mart will be laden with sugar (sometimes over 12 g per serving). Muscle Milk/Monster Milk is a great option because it’s not only sugar-free but also good tasting.
Get an Alternative Choice With BioChem, Spiritein, and Plantfusion
After the Vitamin Shoppe, I stopped at our good ole local health food cooperative. They were a typical alternative health food store and had a wide selection of protein mixes that were distilled from nearly everything you could imagine. I looked them over and asked the woman, “Just tell me this, which ones of these tastes good?” She said that Biochem makes a very popular whey protein supplement. It tasted good. “Ok,” I said. “Which one tastes the worst?” She said she’d gotten the worst feedback from Rice protein drinks. I was amazed that there were protein drinks made from sources I didn’t know were even available. Here are a couple of them:
Plantfusion- a composite of pea, brown rice protein, and artichoke protein sources.
Spiritein- a combination of rice, pea, and soy protein
All of this is just scratching the surface. There are so many protein powders out there, that you could read up on them for weeks. Here are a few good selections, and many of them come from sources that are friendly to those of you trying to get away from dairy, soy, and high-sugar foods that seem so prevalent in our society.
